Pre-K1 & Kinder friends are diving deeper into Japanese culture! ٩( ”ω” )و✨✨✨

💡 Setsubun is how we express “節分” in English. Since Setsubun is unique to Japan, we explain it using the Japanese pronunciation even in English. Now, how do we express some words related to Setsubun in English?
鬼を追い払う → drive away demons
豆まき → throwing beans
恵方巻 → Ehomaki

The Ehomaki roll contains seven ingredients, inspired by the Seven Lucky Gods. These are: dried gourd, shiitake mushrooms, omelet/damaki, cucumber, eel, sweet pink rice, and shrimp. Each ingredient has its own meaning. We used bubble wrap as vinegared rice and made the ingredients out of tissue paper, then rolled them up.

The lucky direction of the year for Setsubun is called 恵方 (“the lucky direction”). The direction changes every year. For example, in 2025, the lucky direction is south-southwest.
On Setsubun, we face this direction and eat the Ehomaki while making a wish, and the rule is that you must not speak while eating.
Wishing for good health and a wonderful year ahead! m(__)m
